Data literacy stands for the competence of a secure and reflective handling of data. Sensitive and personal information is often released unconsciously 'within a click'. However, data sometimes have a very high value, so it is all the more the responsibility of researchers to handle data sensitively, critically and reflectively. This seminar aims to shed light on the professional handling of data and to teach methods that help to generate valid results. This includes, among other things, the formulation of a research question, the formulation of a hypothesis, the determination of suitable variables, the construction of a questionnaire, and the selection of suitable software. In order to be able to successfully master the research project, this course teaches the basics of conducting an (online) survey and discusses them using practical examples.

After the course:

- Know the methodological basics for conducting an (online) survey (basic terms, survey processes, etc.).

- Have gained insight into survey methodology (measurement theory, quality criteria, handling of standardized designs)

- Know the basics of survey data protection.

- Had insights into ongoing projects and completed surveys at KIT

- Were able to try out your knowledge in first practical exercises.

- Were able to implement sample surveys in survey software.

Important: In addition to the seminar day, this course includes a self-study phase (Ilias modules) in the period from 05.02.-18.02.24.

Workload:

1 ECTS: active participation in the seminar and completion of the online modules (approx. 24 hours of independent work).

2 ECTS: active participation in the seminar, completion of the online modules (approx. 24 hours of independent work), and completion of a transfer task (to be announced in the course).

Lecturer:

Sarah Herrmann is a cultural scientist. Her love for data and surveys emerged in her studies (EUKliD/ minor in Sociology) and was reinforced by working in the methods lab of the House of Competence. With parallel training as a systemic consultant, she is also active as a coach in various contexts. Currently, she is working as a research assistant at the interface of the House of Competence (HOC) and KIT Quality Management on the conception of a data literacy module "survey@kit" for students in the field of surveys.

Michael Mäs is a proud sociologist. His research deals with complex systems such as social networks on the Internet, which he investigates using formal approaches and quantitative methods of social research (surveys, network analysis, laboratory and field experiments). His publications include sociology, economics, physics, biology, and computer science.

Carolin Moser is an enthusiastic communication scientist and loves to share her enthusiasm for communication and the necessary know-how for methodological research of communication and social science phenomena. Currently, she is working as a research assistant at the interface of the House of Competence (HOC) and KIT Quality Management on the conception and establishment of an instrument for short surveys to increase student participation.
