“The whole does not equal the sum of its parts; it is something different, whose properties differ from those displayed by the parts from which it is formed”. Dieses faszinierende Zitat von Emile Durkheim, einem der Gründerväter der Soziologie, fasst den Beitrag meines Feldes in einem Satz zusammen. In sozialen Gruppen, Organisationen und Gesellschaften gibt es manchmal Dynamiken, die mit den Zielen der Menschen, die diese Kollektive bilden, nicht im Einklang zu stehen scheinen. Als stolzer Soziologe bin ich überzeugt, dass das Ganze oft etwas anderes ist als die Summe der Einzelheiten. Im Gegensatz zu Durkheim denke ich aber, dass solche Phänomene doch auf das Verhalten von Individuen zurück geführt werden können. Wenn also das Ganze etwas anderes ist also die Summer der Einzelheiten, was fehlt dann auf der rechten Seite der Formel?
Ich nutze den sog. Komplexitätsansatz und wende diesen auf Prozesse wie Meinungspolarisierung, Netzwerksegregation und die Entstehung von Kooperation an. Dazu entwickle ich formale Modelle und teste deren Vorhersagen und zentrale Annahmen der Modelle mit quantitativen Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung. Daten sammle ich in Laborexperimenten, Umfragestudien, und im Internet.
“The whole does not equal the sum of its parts; it is something different, whose properties differ from those displayed by the parts from which it is formed”. This fascinating quote by sociology’s founding father, Emile Durkheim, summarizes the core message of my discipline. Often the behavior of social collectives appears to be inconsistent with the motives of the individuals that constitute the collective. Being a proud sociologist, I am convinced that the whole is often more than the sum of the parts. However, unlike Durkheim I am also convinced that collective phenomena can be explained with theories of individual behavior. Thus, if the whole is more than the sum of the parts, what is missing on the right-hand side of the equation?
I apply a complexity-perspective to understand why and when the whole does not equal the sum of the parts. I study processes of polarization, segregation and cooperation in social networks. I develop formal models to understand the complexity arising from human interaction in networks and test model assumptions and predictions with state-of-the-art empirical methods such as surveys, laboratory experiments, and large-scale data gathered on the Internet.
Kurzlebenslauf / short cv
Ich habe Soziologie und Ökonomie an der Universität Leipzig studiert und bin 2005 an die Universität Groningen gewechselt, wo ich am ICS promiviert wurde. Danach habe ich 5 Jahre an der ETH Zürich in einem interdisziplinären Team von Physikerinnen, Informatikerinnen und Mathematikerinnen gearbeitet. 2015 bin ich dann als Assistant Professor zurück an die Uni Groningen gewechselt. Seit 2019 bin ich Professor für Soziologie und Computational Social Science am KIT. 2023 wurde ich zum Dekan meiner Fakultät (für zwei Jahre) und als Mitglied des Senats gewählt. Zusätzlich ist es mir eine große Freude, das Methodenlabor des House of Competence als wissenschaftliche Leitung zu unterstützen.
I studied sociology and economics at the University of Leipzig (Germany) and moved in 2005 to the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), where I got my PhD at the ICS graduate school. Next, I spend five years at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), working in an interdisciplinary team of physicist, computer scientists, and mathematicians. In 2015, I returned to the University of Groningen as Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology. Since 2019, I am full professor of sociology at KIT. Since 2023, I serve as dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (for two years) and as an elected member of the KIT Senat. I very much enjoy serving as the scientific director of the Methods Lab in KIT´s House of Competence.
Lehre / teaching
Meine Lehrer trägt zum Soziologie-Programm am KIT bei. Beispielsweise bin ich für die Einführung in die Soziologie verantwortlich. Zusätzlich lehre ich am House of Competence, wo ich Kurse im Bereich Forschungsmethoden und Digital Literacy anbiete.
I teach in two programs. First, I contribute to the sociology minor at KIT, being responsible, for instance, for the Introduction to Sociology. Second, I am involved in KIT´s House of Competence, giving courses on research methods and digital literacy.
